LATEST BOOK

Illustrations by Betsy Buck.

Jane Wodening treats animals with such respect that she is willing to admit that two of her best friends of all time were a bird named Coolie and a donkey named Rosco. Animals are always included – or featured – in her published works, most particularly Wolf Dictionary and The Lady Orangutan and Other Stories. Join Jane as she shares her many loves of many species that she “forgot to mention”…

From “Rosco”, page 105:
Roscoe’s bray was not something that could be encompassed by calling it a “Hee-Haw” — it wasn’t like that. The “Hee” part was a kind of a gasp, a strictured inhalation that seemed to say, “Here’s something special,” and the “Haw” part a great passionate roar. And yet, startling as it was and loud as it was, his bray retained a certain objectivity, so that although one might jump at the loudness of it, it wasn’t an intimidating sound. Rather, it was a roar of somebody seeing something that was worthy of notice. And it suggested that perhaps he, too, was worthy of notice.
